Band Practice Dates

My curiosity was really aroused as to HOW the teachers help and guide the Concert Band students/members. As written in the Student Handbook, the ‘Guiding Principles’ for CCA is to build character, team spirit and responsibility; be broad-based with opportunities to specialise; be responsive to inculcating national values and skills and promote social integration. Character Development Programme (CDP) is involved within the CCA framework, which provides a structure for all enrichment activities organised in schools. It also encompass enrichment activities organised as part of National Education, the Community Involvement Programme, and the Pastoral Care and Career Guidance programmes. Also written in the student handbook is “The aims of CDP”. This is what it writes:

The aims of the CDP (Character Development Programme) are to :
a. inculcate national values and develop a sense of belonging to the nation;
b. foster in our students the ability to be creative and flexible, to exercise initiative and be able to solve problems;
c. equip students with skills and knowledge to enable them to lead a meaningful, purposeful and life;
d. expose students to different disciplines and broaden their horizon;
e. complement the formal curriculum and CCA in achieving the Desired Outcomes of Education.

On that day, before the teacher hang up the telephone, she told me about Band Practice for the coming week. Ask about the details, and she said,”It’s on the school’s notice board.” …. “Your child should know…” I don’t understand how it is so difficult for the teachers to tell the parent the dates… or perhaps they should work SMARTER so that everyone else can know about the training dates (can you imagine it is school holidays!!!! Who would go back to school to check the notice board PURPOSELY? On the internet, the school CONCERT BAND WEBSITE is so lousy! It is not conveying any current message for Band members, not even training dates!!!! This is not working in a SMART WAY!

“Luckily” I need to go to the school! I had appointment with the form teacher. After meeting the form teacher, I went to check out on ADSS Concert Band Notice Board (since the teacher said so). Ricsson was surprised to see that there are more than 2 days of training!

I wanted to find out more about Concert Band. I went to the school’s website, click on CCA, and then Performing & Visual Arts, and ultimately, Concert Band. It was totally unhelpful at all. The website did not provide up-to-date information about what’s going on or what’s happening for this band groups of people. It did not even have a record of NORMAL or OFFICIAL Band Practice Dates and venue for Parents/students to see. It did not provide more information about the teachers if students or parents need help (this would cut down on lots of misunderstanding…). Photographs of teachers-in-charge could have put on on the internet for students and parents to see. Email address could have been given so as to provide assistance to those pupils who are sick or could not make it for practice in the last minute; or such things like that.

What we see on the school website, Concert Band, was not of beneficial at all. Next, I click on ‘For Parents’ link on the top. All the information that was listed there was not what I wanted to see either… (For example, we were given the school time-table, and so it is seeing what we already know at the website.)
