Church Choir

My ECA (extracurricular activities) used to be choir. I love to listen to song and sing my favourite songs. I used to go Karaoke… but not now. Nowadays I listen to children songs, and played children songs for Isaac.

Songs are so important in our lives. They are such important entertainment for us. Without song, life would be so dull and bored. Songs can express our feelings and songs can elevate our spirits as well. In church, songs (christian songs) are called hymns. They are songs that praise God.

What pull me to the church I think must be the songs, apart from physical statues and the architectural design of the church. Songs ‘rang’ in my ears and my heart when I reached home after church. During my childhood, I would hum the tune of the hymn after I reached home. I could not recall any lyrics.

Ever since I returned to the church, I still remembered hymns that were sung during my childhood church at St Francis of Assisi. Those were such nice hymns, which I do not know most of the title (but only know the tune). One of them was Song of the Young Prophet and the other is All That I Am.

This is the place where the choir is at Cathedral of the Good Shepherd

The Cathedral Choir of the Risen Christ sings at the Sunday Solemn Mass and at all important liturgies and functions. It is a mixed voice choir of around 75 members comprising both students and working professionals.

Founded in 1970, the choir served at the Church of the Risen Christ for 32 years before being installed at the Cathedral on 14 April 2002.

The motto of the Choir is Pro Pontifice et Patria, which is Latin for For Pope and Country.

The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd houses two pipe organs – the Gallery Organ in the second floor gallery and the Choir Organ in an elevated box in the north transept (as shown below). It is notable that the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd is the only church in Singapore to have two organs that can sound within the same space.

The choir is of utmost important in the church, especially during mass. Without music, the mass is so boring and our spirits cannot be expressed. At Church of St Anthony of Padua, the Music Ministry consists of the Children Choir, Celestial Chorus, Disciple Chorus and the Shepherd’s Voice. Many times, I heard the choir singing/practising in the room. Their songs are so nice.
