I had mentioned in my earlier blogs (Peace Bella: St Anthony Church; Church of St Anthony of Padua) about this church. This is the church which my family attends because it is near our home. I am a Catholic and this church, Church of St Anthony of Padua is a Catholic Church in Woodlands.
This church was being constructed at a time when I was still attending the church at Boon Lay, Church of St Francis of Assisi. At that time, the church was seeking donation. I saw the picture of this church then — air-conditioned, library, etc. It looked so nice then.
Ever since Richard and I got married and moved to Woodlands, we had come to this church. However, in those days, the speaker in the church was very bad. We did not attend church on every Sunday then. During childhood times, our family only went to church on special occasion like Chinese New Year, Good Friday and Christmas. Without any special occasion, we hardly went to the church. When we were older, my mother would urge us to go to church. Many times I would like to go, but nobody was interested. Furthermore, I do not understand why the need to go to church at that time. It was like very meaningless to do something which you do not understand.
This is the signboard which captivated me one day. It says: God knows Your Past and He Offers You A Future.
Over the years, I had seen quite a few priests in the church. The earlier one that I knew was Fr John Khoo and Fr Eugene Chong (if the surname is correct). During those days, going to church was not at all motivational, and boring. Though the heart is willing to learn, the ‘environmental condition’ did not seem to tally. (Shall mention more again)
But things changed! Things changed when I went back to this church again perhaps in the year 2007 or 2006, cannot really remember (but refering back to my blog, maybe it was 2007)…
The priest which ‘captivated’ me, caught my attention was Father Terence (Rev Fr. Terence Pereira). He is very funny, thinking of his face now. But that was not the main thing. The most important thing is he inspires, and I can feel his ‘energy’, his spirit.
The first time I saw him, the first ‘deep’ impression of him was just somewhere at the entrance of the church or the foyer. I saw him with some boys, talking to the boys. Obviously, they had a game of soccer or something like that. He played with the boys. His smile, his voice… everything, showed his capabilities as a leader — I did not know his name then, neither did I know he is a priest! But I was wondering “who is this person?” then.
Soon we discovered that this person who can speak so well (deliver his sermon so clearly) is none other than Fr Terence. In the church, the children always guess who would be the priest. Everybody wants Fr Terence!
This is Fr Terence giving out Holy Communion Certificate to my daughter last year, 2008.
Come In and Find Peace
Though you need food to survive, but you also need spiritual food in your life. What’s more, it is a living God, a true God that listens to your prayer. And it is not superstition. God really exist, and there is really a God in this universe which scientist said they have no proof yet — it was such an amazing experience, the greatest ART of life, a great transformation.
I am still learning, but so far, this is what I had experienced — what I pray for, at least until now, it was fulfilled (though I have no money, and now even in a worsen state as before — but I have never prayed to be rich, nor to pray to have lots of money). What I had asked for, I really got the answers, and it was amazing, really amazing.

I think that as a Catholic you should not be judgemental about the first two priests attached the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Woodlands, Singapore, namely Reverend Father John Khoo. I have spoken to Father John Khoo and I find him a humble and God fearing priest. I think that its not who the preacher at the pulpit is but your attitude towards God that either brings you closer or further from Him.
