Civilian War Memorial

12 March 2010, I went to Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. I passed by this place, one of Singapore’s most famous iconic landmarks of heritage, the Civilian War Memorial. This is a place that I had seen for so many years of my life living in Singapore. But now, it has new meaning…

The Memorial to the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation, usually called the Civilian War Memorial (Chinese: 日本占领时期死难人民纪念碑; Malay: Tugu Peringatan Bagi Mangsa Awam Pemerintahan Jepun) is one of Singapore’s most famous iconic landmarks of heritage.

Built in memory of the civilians killed and massacred during the Japanese occupation of Singapore during World War II, the Civilian War Memorial sits on serene parkland in the midst of busy city traffic near Singapore’s Padang and City Hall. Located within the War Memorial Park at Beach Road within the Central Area, Singapore’s central business district, it is usually easy to spot in most backdrops encompassing the CBD landscape.

The above photograph shows the Civilian War Memorial as seen from Raffles City.

The Civilian War Memorial is located along Beach Road, in the Downtown Core of Singapore’s Central Region. It is a short walk from City Hall MRT Station, east of Padang, Singapore, an iconic open field.

On that day, the family went there at about 930pm. It was dark and there were not many people in this park. Many people walked past this park. A few couples sat at the benches beside this monument. As for us, we took photographs and listened to the water fountain and looked around us…

Photographs of the Memorial Park was taken, but it was not very good (carrying Isaac and the place was dark). This person, Jama, has taken very clear photographs of this park.

The Civilian War Memorial is a monument dedicated to civilians who perished during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore (1942-1945).
