Goh Keng Swee

By now, so many people had already know so much about this great person who had done so much for Singapore. This great man, Dr Goh Keng Swee, was said to have a great foresight, a visionary man, a founding Father of Singapore, a Colossus and so on. All these, I learned from the media — TV, internet and Newspaper.

Who am I? And Who is this person by the name of Dr Goh Keng Swee? We are two different people from different CLASSES! How on earth will I get to know him?

If I had remembered correctly, reading it somewhere, he stayed somewhere at SIGLAP, East Coast Singapore… Well, that does ring a bell! How on earth would I get to know this person who is staying in the East, while I am staying in the West? How on earth would I know him when he is born in the year 1918 even! When he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, I could still hardly understand any language or even to say much words, just like Isaac now!

However, on the day when news of the death of Dr Goh Keng Swee was broke in the news, it was a very ‘familiar’ name to me. It was like I had heard this name before, but really, that was the first time I had seen this person’s face on that day the news of him was shown in TV.

This post is not going to tell you much about Dr Goh Keng Swee. If you want to know who Dr Goh Keng Swee is, the internet links below will describe better. They have people who worked with him, the family members who talked to the journalists. These are the rich and influential people. Who am I? I am not daughter of any INSURANCE COMPANY’s Father, but daughter of LORRY DRIVER’s Father (as what this RICH High-Class Woman in the East side of Singapore would said of the West side of people)!

That aside, I do not have any photographs of Dr Goh Keng Swee since he is not my friend and I do not even know him at all. However, looking at the photographs of Dr Goh Keng Swee at the obituary in the internet, my impression of him is that he is a man who knows what he wants to do. His eyes look focused, a man of determination and confidence. I had specially ‘picked’ this photograph from the many photographs of him found on the internet. I think this photograph of him really look very nice. He has such a charismatic smile, and seemed to have the ability to deliver strongly to people about what he wants (his ability to communicate with people, to influence people).

So that is only my impression of him. What he is really like, I do not know.

The body of the late Dr Goh Keng Swee lied in state at the Parliament House from May 20 to 22 for the public to pay their last respects. I did not know his home address, I am neither his kins nor friends (or colleagues). I was not even invited for his state funeral at Singapore Conference Hall. But I am grateful that the public was given a chance to view him at the Parliament House.

Born in Malacca in the Straits Settlements into a Peranakan family, he came to Singapore at the age of two years. Death of Dr Goh Keng Swee
DR GOH Keng Swee, one of the Founding Fathers of Singapore, died early on Friday morning of pneumonia at home. He was 91.

His widow Dr Phua Swee Liang told reporters at their home in the East Coast area on Friday morning that Dr Goh died at about 5 am. He had been ill for many years and she was the main caregiver, helping to control his diabetes. She told reporters she felt emotionally numb at his death.

He leaves behind his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, two grandsons and three great grandchildren.

Dr Goh will be remembered, above all, for his role as the prime architect of Singapore’s economic success.
