Singapore Flag
This is the Singapore Flag which is placed at my home, beside my table.
The Singapore Flag is halved horizontally – red over white. It has at the top of the hoist, a crescent moon sided by five stars in a circle, all in white. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two to three. The colour red is symbolic of univeral brotherhood and equality of man, while the colour white signifies pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. The crescent represents a young country on the ascent in its ideals of establishing democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality as indicated by the five stars.
The first time I drew the Singapore Flag was when I was in Primary One. And that is also the time where I learned to sing the National Anthem and said the Singapore Pledge. The only time we get to sing the National Anthem and said the Singapore Pledge was during the school days. The National Anthem and Singapore Pledge was said during National Day Parade also. In my lifetime, I had only attended the National Day Celebration one time only, and that was during my Primary School — when the school organized it. Other than that, I had never attended any National Day Parade already.
My sister always likes to get the free tickets for the National Day Parade. She used to ask me to go along, but I was never interested. I think she has never missed a single National Day Parade at all at the stadium or at the new location now (Marina Bay).
National Day Parade was shown on TV every year. Neither did I watch it every year. However, last year, it was the first time I watched National Day Parade 2008, from the start till the end, at home. It was the best moment and touching moment of my lifetime watching last year’s National Day Parade. First time, really first time, had I have such a great emotion deep in my heart….
