Singapore Food

This is the finished product of Singapore Rojak (with Chilli) and with extra cuttlefish added (for my mother) packed in styrofoam box.

What is Singapore Rojak? Rojak means mixed everything together, the similar meaning for Salad (with vegetables all mixed together). Singapore Rojak is the Chinese version of ‘salad’. In the western world, they have vegetable salad (with thousand island dressing, mayonnaise, and various types of dressing), but in Singapore, the Chinese has our own kind of ‘salad’, with a different kind of ‘dressing’ (which we called sauce).

Similar to salad, we can add anything to make a delicious plate of Rojak. Traditionally, the Singapore Rojak contains bean sprout, cucumber, pineapple, kang kong (a type of green vegetable), turnip, fried fritter (you tiao) and fried bean curd (tau pok). The main dressing/sauce which adds flavours and taste to the Rojak is the black coloured sauce mixed with sugar, some assam water and crushed peanuts.

As Singaporean becomes more educated, and also becoming more ‘creative’, nowadays we see many variations of Rojak. There are Rojak that have extra added ingredients and some even called it Fruit Rojak. This meanly are what the businessmen or businesswomen’s ‘patterns’ or ways of marketing to creation varieties for consumers. Fruit Rojak mainly contains mostly fruits, instead of having fried fritters and the tau pok in them. In fruit rojak, there are the fruits like guava, mango, apples, turnip, cucumber, and pineapples. I personally do not like fruit rojak and it costs more than the traditional Rojak too.

You do not get to buy Singapore Rojak everywhere in Singapore nowadays — hardly in food court, but more often in coffee shops. In Woodlands, there are not many places I can buy Rojak too. There is however one which I frequent, which is at Woodlands 888 Plaza (though that is not the best). The best Rojak I had eaten so far is the one at Bugis. I had not been there for a few years already. Now that I am pregnant, I would not be going there in near time, but perhaps when I got a chance to pass by or when Isaac is much older.

This photographs below shows how the Rojak stall in Singapore Coffee Shop looks like. This coffee shop has not been upgraded:

Of course Singapore Rojak is not the only food you can find in Singapore. But Singapore Rojak would depicts what Singapore is like. It is a country where you can find ‘Rojak’ (everything, and a little of everything, and whichever the Rojak seller can think of to add any ingredients to the Rojak).

There are simply so much varieties of food which you can find in Singapore. There are Italian, Muslim, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Western, Thailand, and many more food here in Singapore. It is just so convenient to travel to a restaurant and even food court to start enjoying what you crave for here in Singapore. Having been to a few countries, there are really no place like Singapore. Missing home, and also missing the food here in Singapore. Singapore is really a ‘food paradise’ where we can indulge in a great variety of food here.

In this small country where there is limited travel destination within our own country, the only thing we can enjoy most is really in its food. Living in this hectic and fast paced lifestyle of Singapore, the only rest time and good time to rest and relax is to enjoy a good meal…..
