Singapore Rojak

This is the place where I had bought my rojak a few weeks ago. This place is at Bukit Batok West Avenue 4, Blk 413. Over here, besides this coffee shop, there are Temasek Medical Centre and various shops.

This is the process of making Singapore Rojak. I had ordered two packets of Rojak from this stall vendor — one with chilli and one without chilli. The one with chilli, I had asked to add cuttlefish. The one shown below in this video is without chilli.

The process of making Singapore Rojak (no chilli)

This is the front view of the Rojak Stall, with the chinese character for Rojak written on it — selling at $2 and $3. You can see all the ingredients used for making Rojak being displayed clearly.

I had patronized this stall since the day I moved to Bukit Batok many years ago, during my undergraduate days. Everyday after school, whenever I finished lessons and happened to pass by there, I would buy Rojak from this man. He used to be much fatter, more chubby, fair and look ‘smoother’. But everytime when I passed by his stall, year after year, I found that he had lost weight and now he is much thinner and has ‘more winkled’ skin than ever.

I would not say this is the best Singapore Rojak, but I like to eat this Rojak made by this man. I should say that every Rojak made by different stall vendors taste differently or are unique. Some of them I would not buy from them anymore after the first attempt while some you would not mind going back again. As for this one, the taste is really unique (I cannot taste it anywhere else) and it is hard to find a Rojak stall nowadays that put bean sprout in their Rojak (one of the ingredients).

Having bean sprouts in the Rojak reminds me of my childhood Rojak where the cyclist (mobile Rojak seller) came to our house, pressing their horns and shouting ‘Rojak Rojak’. This is the kind of original ‘traditional’ and simple Rojak perhaps with no lime and no bamboo shoot…

The stall holder (Uncle in the picture/video) has apparently passed on quite sometime ago. I enjoyed the rojak prepared by him too. I think the coffee shop located at Bukit Batok Block 413 is undergoing major renovation, cant wait to see and try out new food.
